What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga: A Joyful Path to Wellbeing

No mats. No Lycra. No Downward-Facing Dog. Just pure, unfiltered joy.

Laughter Yoga is a joyful and surprisingly powerful practice that supports wellbeing through intentional laughter and gentle yogic breathing. Developed by medical doctor Dr Madan Kataria, it is based on the understanding that the body receives the same benefits from voluntary laughter as it does from spontaneous laughter.

There are no poses, mats, or jokes involved. Instead, simple laughter exercises are combined with breath awareness and light movement to release tension, lift mood, and bring the body and nervous system into a more relaxed, balanced state. When practised in a group, laughter naturally becomes contagious, often softening into genuine joy and connection.

Who is Laughter Yoga for?

Sessions are accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness, or experience. Even if laughter feels a little forced at first, the body still benefits through increased oxygenation, reduced stress hormones, and the release of endorphins. Over time, this practice can help reduce stress, improve emotional resilience, boost energy and the immune system, and create a sense of ease and lightness.

Each session is gently structured, beginning with a playful warm up and moving through simple laughter exercises interwoven with calming breathwork. We close with a deeply restorative Yoga Nidra practice, allowing the nervous system to settle and the benefits of the session to integrate. You may leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected to yourself.

It’s especially supportive for those who:

  • Feel overwhelmed, anxious or weighed down by stress

  • Spend a lot of time in their heads and want to reconnect with their bodies

  • Are seeking community, playfulness and deeper emotional resilience

  • Struggle with low mood, fatigue or tension

  • Are curious about holistic approaches to wellbeing that don’t feel too serious

It’s also a gentle reminder that joy isn’t something we need to wait for—it’s something we can consciously cultivate, even on the tough days.

Practicalities

Laughter Yoga is for anyone seeking a softer, more playful approach to wellbeing. It can be especially supportive if you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, low in energy, or simply craving more joy and connection in your life.

I am currently in the process of setting up Laughter Yoga groups. If you feel drawn to join, you are welcome to get in touch with your name and the area you are based in, and I will contact you when a group near you is ready to begin.
