Shamanic Drumming

A rhythmic pathway back to balance

Shamanic drumming uses steady, repetitive rhythm to gently guide the body and mind into a deeply restorative state. The drum speaks directly to the nervous system, offering a way to slow down, regulate and reconnect.

​

Research shows that repetitive rhythm can help shift the nervous system out of fight or flight and into a more relaxed, parasympathetic state. As the drumbeat settles into a steady tempo, brainwaves naturally slow, often moving from busy beta waves into alpha and theta states. These are the same states associated with meditation, creativity, deep relaxation and healing.

Many people experience a sense of grounding, clarity and calm as the body responds to the rhythm. Tension can soften, breathing may deepen and the mind often becomes quieter. Over time, this kind of rhythmic listening can support emotional regulation, reduce stress and anxiety, and encourage a greater sense of inner balance.

The drum is also felt physically through vibration, not just heard. This can create a sense of being held and supported, helping people feel more present in their body and connected to the moment.

The power of drumming in a circle

Connection, co regulation and shared rhythm

​

Drumming in a circle brings an added layer of benefit through shared experience and collective rhythm. Humans are wired for connection, and when we drum together our nervous systems naturally begin to synchronise. This process, known as co regulation, can support emotional safety, trust and a sense of belonging.

​

Being part of a group rhythm can reduce feelings of isolation and gently lift mood. Many people report feeling lighter, more open and more connected after drumming in a circle. The shared beat can help quiet the thinking mind, encourage self expression and foster a sense of unity without the need for words.

​

There is no performance and no right or wrong way to participate. The circle is about listening, responding and allowing yourself to be part of something shared. Simply being present within the rhythm can be deeply nourishing for mental and emotional wellbeing.

What happens in a shamanic drumming circle

Each session begins by arriving gently into the space. We take time to ground, settle and come fully into the present moment, allowing the body and breath to soften.

​

The circle is then opened with intention, creating a sacred and protected space for healing, exploration and joy. This helps establish a sense of safety and containment, allowing everyone to relax into the experience.

​

You will be guided on a short inner journey, supported by the sound of the drum. We then drum together as a group, usually in two or three rounds, each one focusing on a different theme or aspect such as grounding, release, intention or connection.

The session is brought to a close with a simple song or chant, accompanied by our drums, helping to integrate the experience and gently return to everyday awareness.

There is absolutely no pressure to take part in every element. You are welcome to drum, rest, listen, sing softly or simply sit and receive. Many people benefit deeply from just being within the circle and allowing the healing rhythm of the drum to wash over them.

​

These drumming circles are open to everyone. No experience is needed and there is nothing you need to know or prepare in advance.

​

You are invited to participate in whatever way feels right for you on the day. That might mean drumming enthusiastically, joining in gently, or simply relaxing and being held by the sound. All ways of being are welcome.

Important information and contraindications

Sound and rhythm can affect people in different ways, so it is important to listen to your own body and use your own judgement.

​

Shamanic drumming is not suitable for people with sound induced epilepsy, those with a pacemaker, women in the first trimester of pregnancy, or anyone experiencing severe or clinical mental health challenges. If you are unsure whether this practice is appropriate for you, please check with your medical professional before attending.

​

You are always encouraged to take breaks, step back or rest during the session if you need to. Your wellbeing comes first.

​

Drumming circles are held near the Full Moon each month in a small group setting. The space is held with care and intention, creating an atmosphere that feels safe, supportive and relaxed. The session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

​

These gatherings are an invitation to slow down, reconnect and experience the simple yet profound healing power of rhythm, sound and shared presence.
